Come Rain or Shine!
The weather is something we experience every day. One moment the sun is shining, the next the rain is falling, and sometimes the wind is whistling through the trees.
At Serenity Sensory Music, our Weather theme allows us to explore the changing world around us through music, movement, sensory play, and imagination.
From gentle raindrops to rumbling thunderstorms, weather provides endless opportunities for creative musical adventures.
Why Weather Makes a Great Theme
Weather is something everyone can relate to, regardless of age or ability.
Exploring weather through music can help participants:
☀️ Develop observation skills
🌧️ Build communication and language
🌈 Encourage imaginative play
💨 Support sensory exploration
⛈️ Explore emotions and self-expression
🎵 Strengthen listening and attention skills
By connecting music to familiar weather experiences, learning becomes meaningful, engaging, and fun.
Exploring Weather Sounds Through Music
Weather creates some of nature's most fascinating sounds.
Try recreating different weather conditions using instruments:
🎵 Rainmakers for falling rain
🎵 Drums for rolling thunder
🎵 Bells for sparkling sunshine
🎵 Shakers for gusty winds
🎵 Ocean drums for stormy weather
🎵 Chimes for gentle breezes
Encourage participants to experiment with loud and quiet sounds, fast and slow rhythms, and different ways of creating weather-inspired music.
Weather-Themed Musical Activities
Rainstorm Orchestra
Start with gentle finger tapping to represent light rain.
Gradually add instruments and increase the volume to create a storm.
Then slowly reduce the sounds until the storm passes and calm returns.
This activity helps develop listening skills and emotional regulation.
Sunshine Dancing
Play cheerful music and encourage everyone to move like sunbeams shining across the room.
Use yellow scarves or ribbons to enhance the experience.
This supports movement, creativity, and self-expression.
Weather Freeze Game
Call out different weather conditions while music plays.
For example:
☀️ Sunshine = stretch tall
🌧️ Rain = wiggle fingers
⛈️ Thunderstorm = stomp feet
🌈 Rainbow = spin around
This is a fantastic way to develop listening and attention skills.
Musical Weather Forecast
Take turns becoming the weather presenter and describing today's weather using instruments and sounds.
This encourages confidence, communication, and imagination.
Sensory Weather Play
Weather themes offer a variety of sensory experiences.
You might explore:
💧 Water play
☁️ Cotton wool clouds
🌈 Rainbow fabrics
🍃 Leaves and natural materials
❄️ Snow-themed sensory trays
🌬️ Fans or scarves to create wind effects
Always adapt activities to suit individual sensory preferences and comfort levels.
Exploring Emotions Through Weather
Weather can also help us talk about feelings.
Sometimes we feel bright and cheerful like sunshine.
Sometimes we feel calm like a gentle breeze.
Sometimes we feel overwhelmed like a storm.
Using weather as a metaphor can help children and adults recognise, express, and discuss emotions in a safe and creative way.
Music provides a wonderful outlet for exploring these feelings.
Learning About the Natural World
Weather themes provide opportunities to learn about:
• The seasons
• Different types of weather
• Day and night
• Nature and the environment
• How weather affects our daily lives
These learning opportunities can be woven naturally into songs, stories, and sensory activities.
Finding Calm After the Storm
One of my favourite weather activities is exploring the transition from stormy weather to calm sunshine.
Participants can experience loud sounds, energetic movement, and excitement before gradually slowing down and returning to a calm, peaceful state.
This mirrors many emotional experiences and can be a helpful tool for developing self-regulation skills.
Looking Ahead
Whether you're dancing in the sunshine, splashing through puddles, chasing rainbows, or listening to the wind, weather provides endless inspiration for sensory exploration and musical fun.
Through music, movement, and imagination, we can discover the beauty and wonder of the world around us, whatever the weather.
So grab your instruments, look up at the sky, and join me on a weather-filled musical adventure.
Warm wishes,
