As we welcome a brand new year, many of us naturally reflect on the months gone by and look ahead to the possibilities that a fresh start can bring. Whilst New Year's resolutions often focus on big changes, sometimes the most meaningful progress comes from small, consistent moments of connection, creativity, and wellbeing.
At Serenity Sensory Music, our New Year theme is all about embracing new beginnings through music, sensory exploration, and therapeutic play.
Why Music Matters at the Start of a New Year
The beginning of a new year can bring a mixture of emotions. For some children and adults, changes in routine can feel exciting. For others, they can feel overwhelming. Music provides a familiar and comforting structure during times of transition.
Research and music therapy practice have shown that music can help to:
• Support emotional regulation
• Reduce feelings of anxiety
• Encourage communication and self-expression
• Promote positive social interaction
• Create a sense of predictability and routine
By incorporating music into daily life, we can create moments of calm and connection as we settle into a new year.
Exploring New Sounds and New Experiences
A New Year theme offers a wonderful opportunity to explore new instruments, sounds, and sensory experiences.
Try introducing:
🎵 Chime bars or bells to represent fresh beginnings
🎵 Shakers and drums to create celebratory rhythms
🎵 Rainmakers to encourage mindful listening
🎵 Scarves and ribbons to explore movement with music
Encourage children and adults to experiment freely, discovering sounds they enjoy and expressing themselves through musical play.
Musical Activities to Try at Home
Create a Celebration Drum Circle
Use drums, pots, pans, or tapping sticks to create a simple rhythm together. Take turns leading the group and following each other's beats.
Make a Musical Memory Jar
Think about favourite memories from the previous year. Assign each memory a different sound or instrument and create a musical story together.
New Year Sound Hunt
Listen carefully to the sounds around your home or garden. How many different sounds can you hear? Can you imitate them using your voice or instruments?
Musical Goal Setting
Instead of traditional resolutions, choose a musical goal:
• Learn a new song
• Try a new instrument
• Spend five minutes listening mindfully to music each day
• Create a family music time each week
Supporting Emotional Wellbeing Through Music
The start of a new year can be a helpful time to introduce calming musical routines.
A simple regulation activity might include:
Taking three slow breaths.
Listening to a favourite calming song.
Gently moving a scarf or ribbon in time with the music.
Ending with a moment of quiet reflection.
These small musical rituals can help support emotional balance and provide a sense of safety and predictability.
Looking Ahead
A new year isn't about being perfect or making huge changes overnight. It's about creating opportunities for growth, connection, and joy.
Through sensory music, we can celebrate every small achievement, every new experience, and every moment of shared creativity.
As we begin this new chapter together, I look forward to exploring many exciting themes, sounds, and musical adventures throughout the year.
Here's to a year filled with music, wellbeing, confidence, and sensory magic.
Warm wishes,
Laura Seymour
